The Boys From Syracuse
Rodgers & Hart, 1938
Sat, Jul 24, 7:30 - 10:00 pm
Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute
Twins! More twins! Women chaste and chased! The first musical ever adapted from Shakespeare (The Comedy Of Errors) remains the most madcap musical farce ever to animate the stage...a smash hit in 1938 and certainly one of Rodgers & Harts' greatest score with fantastic songs, including 3 classic hits: "This Can't Be Love", "Falling In Love With Love", and "Sing For Your Supper"!
Antipholus of Syracuse and his wily servant, Dromio, travel to Ephesus in search of their respective twins, from whom they were separated as babes in a shipwreck. Naturally, they are immediately taken for their brothers and we're off and running on a riotous chase from marketplace to marital bed. Perplexed wives, disgruntled courtesans, outraged constables and an audience roaring with laughter are left in its wake before this show's tangled web is unraveled, and Rodgers & Hart have triumphed once again!
Directed and choreographed by OFAM veteran Richard Jessup, with music direction by Vicki Brabham and sets by Jerry Hooker, our fresh new production of this rarely-seen farce is led by OFAM favorites Chas King and Gregory Mathans as the befuddled Antipholus twins and Conor O'Brien and Steven Bennett as the matching Dromios. Throw in Madelyn Schwartz, Erica Jean and Kathryn Leonard as one highly perplexed household of women and you've got an evening to remember.
